This Is My Life, surviving academia as a Black woman in Britain

This Is My Life, surviving academia as a Black woman in Britain

Tomi Akingbade

University of Cambridge & Founder of the Black Women in Science Network

Black women face unique pressures from both within and outside of the workplace.  In 2018, her own need for relatable representation in the science industry led her to create the Black Women in Science Network.  In her time as an undergraduate student, NHS medical laboratory assistant, a research technician and now as a postgraduate student, Tomi has experienced the realities of existing as a Black woman in the early stages of her career. In “This Is My Life", Tomi will take you through the trials and triumphs of her journey as a Black woman pursuing an academic career; the lessons she has learnt; the things she wishes everyone knew; and the steps we can take towards becoming a more equitable community.
