Discover a career in science
Staff, students and researchers at the Babraham Institute are keen to share their passion for science. They have worked with our Public Engagement team to develop a series of videos to highlight the range of career opportunities available in science, both at the laboratory bench and away from it.
The videos and complementary poster feature staff and students in different job roles and at different stages of their career. Aimed at secondary school and sixth-form students, the videos explore what inspired people to pursue a career in science, what they do on a daily basis and how the various careers can progress.
Feedback from previous schools’ events showed us that while students enjoy visiting our labs to try their hand at cutting-edge science, a key element is the opportunity for them to discuss careers in science with our researchers. Recognising the importance of providing more information to students considering their career options, we started to develop the new material as part of a Nuffield placement project which ran at the Institute during the summer.
The groundwork for the video project, including research at a local sixth-form college and interviews with our scientists, was carried out by Bethan, a student at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge. Two days of filming also allowed us to capture how our staff, students and researchers manage their work-life balance as well as showing what makes the Babraham Institute such an inspiring place to work.
The eight videos will be released throughout November and December, with the first, featuring Lucy Field, a research assistant in Jon Houseley's Group in the Epigenetics Programme. Keep an eye on our new ‘Discover a Career in Science’ web page as further videos are added!
A poster which includes all the scientists featured in the video series is now available to download from www.babraham.ac.uk/get-involved/discover-a-career-in-science. If you would like printed copies or wish to request a school visit please email firstname.lastname@example.org
