Sixth Form Conference 2022: Healthy Ageing

Sixth Form Conference 2022: Healthy Ageing

Sixth Form Conference 2022: Healthy Ageing

Our popular Babraham Institute Sixth-Form Conference (BISFC) will return on Thursday 1st December 2022, 6-9pm, in the Petersfield Lecture Theatre, Babraham Research Campus.

At BISFC, students will hear a series of lightning talks on our cutting-edge fundamental biology research, as well as finding out more about a variety of careers in bioscience. Participants can also get creative by submitting a scientific poster or piece of artwork to our design competition, with the top entries being invited to present their creation at the conference. This is a brilliant opportunity for students to demonstrate their independent research or design skills, and to experience a taste of a real-life academic conference.

The theme of BISFC 2022 is Healthy Ageing. This is a key focus of much of our cutting-edge research at the Babraham Institute. Read more about our Healthy Ageing research here.

Registration for the Conference is now closed. Please note this is an in-person event and takes place at the Babraham Institute.

Getting to the Institute

Please see the 'Getting Here' section of our Contact Us page for details about how to reach the Institute.

We will also be running a free shuttle bus for the Conference. This will depart from Station Road, Cambridge, CB1 2JW at 5.30pm and return to the same location at 9.15pm. You may request a seat(s) on the shuttle bus when you register, or by emailing PE@babraham.ac.uk.

Places on the shuttle bus are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Design Competition

Students can get involved with BISFC 2022 by submitting a scientific poster or piece of artwork to our Design Competition.

Submissions for both posters and art pieces are now closed.

Please note, submitting a poster or art piece to the Design Competition does not register you for the Conference. You need to register for the Conference separately.

A judging panel of BI staff will assess entrants on the following criteria.

For posters:

  • How much the style, format and tone reflect that of a scientific poster
  • The scientific content and relevance to the Conference theme (Healthy Ageing)
  • The visual appeal of the poster

For artwork:

  • Creativity and originality in design
  • How well the piece conveys a scientific concept, and the relevance of this to the Conference theme
  • The visual/aesthetic appeal of the artwork

Shortlisted entrants to both the poster and art competitions will have their pieces on display at BISFC 2022, where we will announce the overall winners and award prizes (first prize: £25 gift voucher and a copy of Andrew Steele’s book Ageless). We will also be creating a digital booklet containing all submitted pieces.

We have produced a Padlet board to provide guidance and inspiration for the competition.
