Schools' Day 2023

In March 2023 the Babraham Institute celebrated the return of Schools' Day  – an annual event where secondary and sixth-form students complete hands-on lab projects, guided by Institute researchers. Often using equipment not available within schools, Schools’ Day aims to enthuse, inspire and motivate students and provide a taste of what life is really like in the lab. Projects from this year's Schools' Day included:

  • Monitoring cancer-killing T cells using flow cytometry
  • Investigating how B vitamins impact metabolism using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS)
  • Preparing and observing samples using a scanning electron microscope (SEM)
  • Identifying genetic mutations using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Exploring enzyme function using gel electrophoresis

Approximately 170 students and 40 teachers attended, mostly from the local region but some from schools as far afield as Lancashire and Jersey.
