Hugh Pelham is the Director of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology. He joined the Laboratory in 1981 and became Director in 2006, having previously been Head of the Cell Biology Division. His research interests are in basic cell biology, particularly the organisation of the internal membranes in cells and the turnover of membrane proteins. Hugh studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and obtained a PhD in biochemistry there before completing his postdoctoral studies in Baltimore, USA.
Hugh has been internationally recognised with numerous awards for his research and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1988. In 2011, he received a knighthood for services to science.
