Regulation of plasma membrane turnover by lipid signalsThe plasma membrane of a cell plays a critical role in its interactions with its environment. Thus the size and composition of the plasma membrane is a critical determinant of the ability of a cell to respond to ongoing changes in the extracellular environment. A number of cellular mechanisms that contribute to plasma membrane shape, size and composition have been determined. However there has been limited insight into the processes by which turnover of plasma membrane is regulated. I will describe recent work from our group on the role of phospholipases, enzymes that can metabolize membrane lipids in tuning plasma membrane turnover.
