Bacterial Chemotaxis

The chemotaxis pathway of Escherichia coli, which enables the bacteria to find their optimum environment, is arguably the best-studied signalling system in biology.

By combining particle-based simulations and quantitative fluorescent microscopy we study the dynamics of the involved proteins.

YFP CheZSubtle changes in interactions between the involved signalling proteins influences spatial organisation, which in turn influences signalling properties such as sensitivity, fidelity, robustness and gain. As these are fundamental properties of all signalling systems, we can extend these concepts to other model organisms.
