The Heidi Welch Group

Our lab is part of the Signalling Programme at the Babraham Institute. We study Rac-GEFs, proteins that activate the small G protein Rac and thus regulate cell shape, motility, gene expression and oxygen radicals. Over recent years, we have discovered P-Rex family Rac-GEFs and studied their regulation and functions. They are important for leukocyte responses, neuronal morphology and plasticity, and for melanocyte migration during development. When de-regulated they contribute to inflammatory disorders, cancer growth and metastasis. Currently, our lab investigates new functional roles for P-Rex, other neutrophil Rac-GEFs in addition to P-Rex, and new ways to monitor and control Rac-GEF activity.
