The Heidi Welch Group
Our group is part of the Inositide Laboratory, a Signalling lab at the Babraham Institute. We are interested in activators of the small G protein Rac, an essential regulator of cell shape and motility, gene expression and reactive oxygen species formation. A few years ago, we discovered a new family of Rac activators, the P-Rex family of guanine-nucleotide exchange factors. Since then, we have been studying the functional importance and mode of regulation of the P-Rex family, concentrating on two main cell systems, the neutrophil of the innate immune system and the Purkinje neuron of the cerebellum. This research is currently ongoing and, and we have started to study the roles and regulation of other activators of Rac.
