The Babraham Institute opened its laboratories to 125 GCSE and A level students from Cambridgeshire during National Science Week, providing an unrivalled opportunity to do short research projects alongside 'real scientists'. Students spent the day immersed in laboratory experiments and at lunchtime took part in a careers workshop with young researchers from the Institute.
Ian Harvey, Head of Biology at Hills Road 6th Form College said, “Local schools and colleges have been bringing students to Babraham to the annual Babraham Schools' Day for over 10 years. It is an important component of our year, a chance for some students to encounter leading-edge science and gain hands-on experience of techniques way beyond what they would meet in schools. It is this type of enrichment experience that inspires young people and in some cases has stimulated an interest in biological sciences as a career.
Professor Michael Wakelam, the new Director of the Institute added, ”As in previous years, we have been delighted to host this event, which gives us the opportunity to expose the students to leading-edge research and interact with our scientists. We hope in this way that we will not just inspire future scientists, but also introduce those who will ultimately pursue different careers, to the excitement of modern biological research”

About the Babraham Institute
The Babraham Institute is a charitable organisation devoted to biomedical research and is an institute of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The Institute’s research is focused on understanding the biological events that underlie the normal functions of cells and on how their failure or abnormality may lead to disease. As such, Institute scientists are striving to find cures for conditions where there is currently no treatment or where the existing treatment is not fully effective or causes serious side effects. The latest technologies are being used to study the basis of conditions such as neurodegenerative disorders, birth defects, cancer and diseases of the immune and cardiovascular systems. With a strategic focus on ‘healthy ageing’, novel approaches for tackling chronic diseases and public health concerns like obesity are being discovered. The Institute’s innovative research is commercialised through Babraham Bioscience Technologies (BBT) Ltd, which also manages Babraham’s vibrant Bioincubator on the Babraham Research Campus, six miles south-east of Cambridge.
