All students in the above categories are eligible for fully funded BBSRC or MRC Studentships from our quota Departmental Training Awards. Such studentships will cover both University and College fees, together with a maintenance allowance.
Babraham Institute European Studentships
Starting in 2009, the Babraham Institute is pleased to announce the launch of the Babraham Institute European Studentships scheme. This scheme will be funded jointly by the Babraham Institute and the Cambridge European Trust and will provide full funding (fees and maintenance allowance) for up to three studentships annually for EU nationals not eligible for our full DTA quota awards.
Other EU nationals
Other EU nationals who are not eligible for one of our fully funded DTA quota awards, or who have been unsuccessful in being awarded one of our Babraham Institute European fully funded studentships, may be considered for DTA quota “fees only” awards. EU students in this category will have their University and College fees paid by Research Council DTA quota funds but will need to find their own funding for their maintenance. Possible sources of funding for maintenance grants would include industrial studentships, studentships from the student’s home country or from the Cambridge European Trusts. However, it should be noted that applications for the latter need to be submitted on University of Cambridge GRADSAF forms by the stated deadline, usually mid-December each year.
NOTE: All EU nationals should check their eligibility for funding for Research Council Studentships at http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/training/eligibility.pdf
Overseas Students
Overseas students will need to provide their own funding for University and College fees and for their maintenance stipend.
Financial Aid for Overseas Fee Status Students
Students from overseas are generally funded either by studentships available from their own country or scholarships awarded through the University of Cambridge e.g. the Cambridge International Scholarships, or by for example The Gates Cambridge Trust, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust. These awards are highly competitive, with many more applicants than there are awards available. You should, therefore investigate all other sources of funding. The Graduate Studies Prospectus provides information about the minimum costs involved when studying in Cambridge and funding advice. In general the living expense stipends paid by such Trusts are lower than those paid by the UK Research Councils. Depending on your status - Home, EU or Overseas - the process and opportunities will differ.
Funding available to overseas fee-paying students is summarised here and to be considered for these awards candidates should apply by the stated deadline, usually mid-December each year.
