Scientists and PhD students within the Epigenetics ISP regularly take part in the Institute’s Public Engagement activities for our local community and school pupils. In 2011 Francesco Cambuli (Hemberger laboratory) and Stefan Schoenfelder were ‘Researchers in Residence’ at Netherhall School. In June the students visited Babraham to learn how to do DNA gel electrophoresis and see science in action. “We explained to the pupils that there are many secrets of life still to be discovered,” Francesco and Stefan said, “and with their enthusiasm in performing simple experiments, they remind us that doing science can be a beautiful adventure!”
6th Form Conferences, a new initiative launched in 2007 after consultation with teachers, aim to enrich A’ level biology, broaden awareness of socio-ethical issues in contemporary science and contribute to teachers’ Continuing Professional Development. The Epigenetics ISP scientists and PhD students have been involved with the Stem Cell Conference (2007 and 2010) and Bioscience of Ageing Conference (2008) providing talks and helping to facilitate group discussions about the scientific, ethical and social implications of stem cell research.
The Epigenetics ISP team has also been active in at the Cambridge Science Festival in since 2007, when we developed a Stem Cell exhibit in partnership with one of the companies based at the Babraham Research Campus. In 2007 Wolf Reik was invited to give a keynote evening lecture for the Festival explaining the ‘new science of Epigenetics’. PhD students from the Epigenetics ISP have helped to explain Babraham’s displays at the Science Festival and also at the Royal Society summer Science Exhibition in 2010.
Bioscience Boot Camp, established in 2007, gives 6th formers an unrivalled insight into bioscience research through short research placements, science talks, careers discussions and a science/ethics workshop. It enables greater interaction with inspiring role models in science-based professions from academia to early-stage bioscience companies and the pharmaceutical industry to help students make informed decisions about their careers. Bioscience Boot Camp 2011 featured a talk about epigenetics and stem cells by Dr Gabriella Ficz. The ethics workshop focused on the social and ethical challenges associated with stem cell research and regenerative medicine.
A number of our scientists engage with the media and political stakeholders. Professor Wolf Reik, Head of the Epigenetics ISP regularly contributes to the print and broadcast media, nationally and internationally, often through the Science Media Centre, providing comment on topical issues or in press briefings.
