Scientists and PhD students within this ISP regularly take part in the Institute’s Public Engagement activities for our local community, school pupils and journalists. The Head of the ISP, Peter Fraser is a STEM Ambassador and has given talks at Swavesey Village College and about his research and careers in science. All Group Leaders in the Chromatin ISP are STEM Ambassadors and many have regularly supported summer internships for 6th formers and undergraduates.
In 2011 Stefan Schoenfelder and Francesco Cambuli were ‘Researchers in Residence’ at Netherhall School. In collaboration with the teachers Aoife Jenkins and Anne Stewart, they provided talks and practicals about “Strawberries, worms and you – the story of DNA” for a group of 8 pupils, aged 11/12 years old. In June they visited Babraham to learn how to do DNA gel electrophoresis and see science in action.
“We explained to the pupils that there are many secrets of life still to be discovered,” Francesco and Stefan said, “and with their enthusiasm in performing simple experiments, they remind us that doing science can be a beautiful adventure!”
Anne Corcoran’s laboratory hosted 3 students during the 2011 Bioscience Boot Camp, a one-week intensive programme designed to give 6th formers an unrivalled insight into bioscience research through short research placements, science talks from Babraham’s researchers, careers discussions and a science/ethics workshop. Established in 2007, Boot Camp enables greater interaction with inspiring role models in science-based professions from academia to early-stage bioscience companies and the pharmaceutical industry.
Louise Matheson, a PhD student in Anne’s laboratory who designed the projects said, “It was an enjoyable experience and great to see some enthusiastic students really engage with the project, as well as gaining some insight into what it's like to work in scientific research.” One of her students added, “It was challenging but very interesting and gave me a good sense of achievement. I particularly liked doing the practicals and being introduced to scientific ideas I am unfamiliar with.”
