The Hardwick Room is the original Drawing Room of the old Hall and had not been substantially decorated since the Hall passed out of private hands. This (benevolent) neglect had preserved the original paint and form of the ceiling which meant that a full conservation-accredited redecoration could take place. The carpet tiles were also lifted to reveal the original floor, now also restored.
Used by the first members of the Institute as a Laboratory and then Accounts Office, the original Dining Room of the Hall had suffered badly.
The oak panelling was whitewashed and the room was festooned with computer wires. A painstaking restoration has brought back the vibrancy of the wood, picked out the ceiling moulded details, reinstated the fireplace and removed the 1950s metal framed additional windows, thus restoring the original window frontage on the ground floor.
