Socio-Economic impact of the Babraham Research Campus

Details of research translation activities since 2001 through commercial and medically-related collaborations by Institute scientists are listed here. In addition to the direct benefits being derived from our research findings in the long term, the Institute and its research and facilities form the cornerstone of the knowledge-driven Babraham Research Campus, which is already a rapidly expanding economic success for the Cambridge region and nationally.

Minerva and MeditrinaSince the Babraham Bioincubator opened in December 1998, 49 companies are or have been through the facilities, with 30 currently in residence. In total, these companies have raised over £M330 of investment funding to date. The current companies occupy 73,000 ft2 of laboratory and office space, including two purpose-built buildings erected by BBT, and employ over 240 staff.

Over the next 4-5 years, the BBSRC and Babraham Institute will invest over £M35 in new research facilities and BBT will look to secure ca. £M50-60 for further commercial facilities on the campus. On completion of these plans there will be approaching 1,700 people working in bioscience organizations on the Babraham Research Campus.
